Reactive:

This basic AI won’t recall its specific tasks, making it different because it only reacts to real-time circumstances. The simple structure focuses on making decisions in the moment.

Limited Memory:

The name tells you what you need to know: this AI will keep some memory of past tasks so it can improve along the way and make better predictions for future tasks.

Theory of Mind:

Going beyond itself, this class of AI recognizes that people have distinct thoughts and needs. It will understand human behavior more than the other classes.

Self-Aware:

This strong AI doesn’t exist outside of fiction, but it refers to machine intelligence that understands both its and humanity’s thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.

Alan Turing invented the Turing Test to determine if an AI can replicate human consciousness. A human being will try to tell if they’re talking to a computer or a person by asking questions, using the answers to decide. If self-aware AI is developed one day, it would most likely need to pass this test to make it official.

Forbes also described three extra types of AI in 2019:

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI):

“Narrow” here describes the range of tasks an AI can complete. Most AI developed so far do just what they’re programmed to do, making that range of automated tasks very narrow. See what they did there? Whether it’s a reactive AI or a deep learning system, it would be ANI because they only do specific things.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI):

This term has more to do with capability than classification. AGI is how well an AI can comprehend, recognize, learn, and operate like a human being. Of course, AI doesn’t need to replicate these perfectly in order to speed up processes with machine intelligence.

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI):

The Philosopher's Stone of AI, artificial superintelligence is expected to be the ultimate goal. AGI is based on how well AI can mimic humanity, while ASI is based on how much they can exceed it. Because machines can be given more memory, processing power, and general analytic abilities than a human being, it’s presumed that they would outdo any person.

Uses of AI Today

Here are some examples of uses for artificial intelligence, although how common they are can vary based on their programmed tasks.

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): You probably interact with this every day. From email filters to predictive text, NLP can be simple or complex depending on the goal of their specific tasks. Companies typically use this AI for natural-sounding chatbots.

  • Machine Learning and Deep Learning: Deep learning is a type of machine learning, which covers many AI systems. From speech recognition to analytics, machine learning has various uses. Deep learning is also expansive, found in basic chatbots and  advanced self-driving cars or drones.

  • Neural Networks: These fall under deep learning and are well-suited to noticing patterns and making decisions. They can identify forged signatures or credit card fraud, recognize faces or voices, make diagnoses, and handle massive amounts of data.

  • Computer Vision: When you do a reverse image search, you’re using computer vision. This type of AI gathers data from images, footage, or other visual input–even in real time. This AI technology is now being used in weather, farming, and other industries.

How AI is Changing the Industry

You probably didn’t expect to see farming as an industry that’s making good on AI, but there are a lot of applications for AI technology. Finance, medical services, manufacturing, and other business types are finding ways to automate procedures and speed up their delivery times with artificial intelligence.

These computers are not independent; they just take care of automatable tasks so humans can do more nuanced, high-skill tasks. People examine the analytics and results from AI–which are finished in a fraction of the time than if they did it manually–then do better work based on those findings.
